Jigjiga: Traditional Somali folk dance boom

I am waving to you from Ethiopian Somali regional state capital, Jigjiga which is a hub for the traditional Somali folk dance of Dhaanto. Unlike the classical music, the genre of traditional folk music is extremely interesting when long time and legendary singers take to the stage.

To many, the mania is similar to Ethiopian pop idol shows in Addis Ababa. It is gaining massive popularity on the state broadcaster 'ESTV' and has taken roots outside Jigjiga.

Every evening, Jigjiga hosts young contestants ,and they fearlessly perform in the spotlight in the presence of Judges chery picked for the competion.

Among the most popular artists are Ali Dhaanto, Ahmed Budul who is also poet, Bashir Dirgax and Nur Arale.

Jigjiga is special!!!
